Head Shape Abnormalities and Treatment
Head shape abnormalities can occur due to premature fusion of skull sutures, leading to conditions like plagiocephaly. While plagiocephaly often corrects itself over time without medical intervention, some parents opt for head braces to encourage more even head growth. However, mainstream specialists like neurosurgeons typically do not recommend this treatment, and it is not covered by the NHS. Head braces are more commonly used in countries outside the UK, especially in other parts of Europe.
Diagnosis and Monitoring
A physical examination, including head circumference measurement, is usually sufficient to diagnose head shape abnormalities. Monitoring the rate of head growth and progression of head shape over time is essential, often requiring follow-up measurements after 6 weeks. In some cases, x-rays or CT head scans may be necessary for a more detailed evaluation.
