Situation of Failure to Thrive in Children
This situation refers to a slow rate of weight gain or periods of poor weight gain that cause a child's measured body weight to drop through the UK growth centiles. These growth charts are valuable tools for doctors, allowing quick comparisons to be made with the expected weight of other children of the same age. The charts also help track growth in terms of weight, length, and head circumference, providing more comprehensive information than a one-time comparison against peers.
Various physical and psychological issues can impact growth and lead to failure to thrive. For instance, diseases affecting the gut have different effects on growth compared to those affecting other areas like hair. However, growth charts can differentiate between these impacts. Diseases involving organs like the small bowel, pancreas, or liver can significantly affect growth due to their roles in fat digestion.
Moreover, the timing of when failure to thrive begins is crucial. Some conditions manifest at specific stages such as during weaning.
When addressing failure to thrive, doctors should first investigate potential physical illnesses. Additionally, in the first year of life, adjustments are made for prematurity when calculating age, resulting in higher centile scores for babies. Babies born unusually heavy may experience catch-down growth, where they gradually move towards a weight centile matching their length centile within the initial 6 weeks.
